The History of the Spinning Janny
(the nitty-gritty, nuts and bolts of our kite)
Ever since he was a young boy my husband wanted to make a kite fly and
spin. Who knows where such a creative desire came from, but in 1974 he
announced his intent and a family quest began. Armed with remnants of
plastic, straws and styrofoam trays the kite took many forms. However, not
until we read Zechariah 5:2 in the Bible did we have a clear foundation upon
which to build. In this verse a ratio of 2:1 for a flying scroll is clearly
presented. We latched onto this ratio as a solid principle and began to
design our spinning kite.
We are not the first to take a statement of fact from Scripture and build
upon it.
In 1923 the State of Virginia erected a memorial and a bronze plaque which
reads:
Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873)
Pathfinder of the Seas
The Genius who first snatched
From Ocean and Atmosphere
The Secret of their Laws
Mr. Maury had read Psalms 8:8 and decided that if the Bible said there were
". . . paths in the seas" he would find them and chart them. A fuller
explanation of the impact of his life's work can be found in Volume 32,
September 1995, of the Creation Research Society Quarterly.
It is our belief that God is the Author of the Bible. We had already trusted
in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life," as the foundation for our personal salvation (a very serious issue).
It is our delight that the Biblical dimensions of Zechariah's flying roll fit our
need for a foundation upon which to build our kite (a fun and not-so-
serious issue).
Please feel free to write to us if you have any questions on either issue.
Oh Yes, the kite is affectionately named for me, the real Janny!
God Bless you,
Carl and JoAnn Knight
